Wanting to lose weight, but not knowing where to start can be a very scary thing. A feeling of low self-confidence and a lack of knowledge about health and fitness can be paralyzing and often help to feed a downward spiraling attitude. These feelings are not only natural, but common to most. Losing weight and getting healthy are lifestyle changes that you have to choose to make. Just like any other big life event like changing jobs, buying a house, or starting a family, taking the steps to lose weight and get healthy require full conviction and focus. I cannot stress this point enough - unless conflicted with nasty stomach bug or life-threatening illness - losing weight requires effort, it does not happen magically, and it does not happen overnight.
Okay, you want to lose weight. You've made the decision, now what do you do? I always recommend taking a few moments to write down the different reasons that you want to lose weight. It can be as simple as wanting to be ready for bathing suit season and fitting into your skinny jeans, or as serious as losing enough weight that you no longer need to take your blood pressure or diabetic medicines. If you have three reasons, write three down. If you have more - then write them all down. After you've written them all down, take a moment to pick your number 1 reason and then put that on a separate sticky note and place that in a spot you'll see every day (the corner of your bathroom mirror, or on the side of your computer monitor for example). Now remember - you've written this down for a reason. It may seem cheesy, but when you see this note, READ IT, don't just glance at it and ignore it. Avoiding your problems and choosing to ignore the elephant on your back (or the bag of chips on the counter or that chocolate cake!) are what has landed you in your present situation.
Think about the important people in your life - your spouse, parents, coworkers, best friends, anybody that you spend time with on a frequent basis. They don't have to want to lose weight with you, but they definitely need to support you. Maybe you have a history of going on diets or starting an exercise program to lose weight, and they have experienced this with you before. If that's the case, they may be skeptical of your ability to stick to your plan. Write yourself a script - tell them that you've made a decision to get healthy - recount to them the reasons that are supporting your decision (you wrote them down, you should remember them). Your coworkers will hopefully understand that happy hour drinks are not going to fit in your plan anymore, and neither will going halfsies on a pizza at lunch time. As I stated earlier - this is a big decision and you need support from everywhere you can get it.
The next thing that you need to do is arm yourself with a support system.
You've made a decision to change your life for the better - great work and good Luck!
